QANA

Mohamadreza Abbasian / Iran / 2006 / 20 min / Documentary

On April 18 1996, Israeli howitzers shelled a UN compound in the village of Qana, a few kilometres south east of Tyre. Around 800 civilians had taken shelter at the base. This particular area was targeted in retaliation for the Hizballah attack on one of their special forces groups who were in action north of and outside of the Israeli-occupied security zone, laying landmines. Somewhere in the region of a hundred civilians were killed and another hundred were seriously injured. The majority of the casualties were residents of nearby villages who had fled the conflict – four of the dead were UN troops. Documentary maker Mohammadreza Abbasian takes another look at the massacre and re-opens the file relating to what exactly happened on that fateful day.
